How Search Ranking Works on a Freelance Marketplace
Aug 23, 2026 • QwikJob Team

Freelancers spend a lot of energy speculating about the algorithm. The inputs are less exotic than the speculation suggests, and most of them are things you can simply decide to do.
Relevance comes first
Before anything else, the platform has to decide whether you match the search. That is driven by your title, your skills, your service descriptions and your category. A profile that says creative professional matches nothing, because nobody searches for that.
Write what people actually type: React developer, GST filing, explainer video.
Then evidence of delivery
Once relevance is established, ranking is mostly a question of who has demonstrated they finish work.
- Completed orders
- Reviews, weighted toward recent ones
- Completion rate, which is orders finished against orders started
- Response time

Why response time matters so much
Because it is the one signal available before you have any history. A new freelancer who replies in twenty minutes outranks a new freelancer who replies in two days, and that is the only lever a new profile has on day one.
Response time is the only ranking input you can change today and see the effect of tomorrow.
What cancellations cost
A cancelled order is worse than a slightly imperfect completed one. It signals unreliability, and completion rate is slow to recover. Think carefully before accepting work you may not finish.
What boosts do and do not do
A paid boost buys placement. It does not buy a review, a completion rate, or a client who trusts you. It puts a profile in front of more people, which is only useful if the profile converts once seen.
Fix the profile first. Then consider paying to show it to more people.
