Setting Your First Freelance Rate in India

New freelancers almost always underprice, and almost always for the same reason: they compare their hourly rate to a salary. Those two numbers are not comparable, and treating them as if they are is how people end up earning less freelancing than they did employed.

Start with what you actually keep

A salary quietly includes things a freelance rate does not:

• Paid leave, sick days and public holidays
• Employer contribution to provident fund
• Health cover
• A desk, a laptop, electricity and internet
• Time spent on work that is not billable

A freelancer pays for all of it out of the rate. So the rate has to be higher than the salary equivalent just to break even.

The arithmetic

Work backwards from the annual income you need.

1. Decide your target annual income
2. Add thirty percent for costs, equipment and cover
3. Divide by billable weeks, assuming forty-four rather than fifty-two
4. Divide by billable hours per week, assuming twenty-five rather than forty

That last step is the one people skip. Nobody bills forty hours a week. Proposals, invoices, calls, admin and finding the next client all take time and none of it is billable.

Why twenty-five billable hours

Because a full-time freelancer who bills twenty-five hours a week is doing well. If you plan at forty and deliver twenty-five, you have priced yourself thirty-eight percent short and will feel it every month.

Your rate is not what you are worth. It is what makes the work sustainable.

Raising it later

Raise on new clients first, not existing ones. Quote the new number to the next person who asks. If they say yes without hesitating, it was too low. If nobody says yes for a month, ease back.

What a zero commission platform changes

On a marketplace taking twenty percent, a rate of 1,000 rupees an hour nets 800. On QwikJob the same rate nets the full 1,000, so you can quote a lower number than you would elsewhere and still take home more. That is a real advantage when a client is comparing quotes.
