What Verified Actually Means on a Marketplace

A verified badge is one of the strongest signals a marketplace can show, which is exactly why it needs to mean something specific. On different platforms it means wildly different things, from a confirmed email address to a checked government ID.

The weak version

On many sites, verified means the person clicked a link in an email. That confirms an inbox exists. It says nothing about who is behind it, and anyone can have as many as they like.

The useful version

Identity verification means a document was checked against the name on the account. It does not guarantee good work, but it does mean there is a real, identifiable person on the other side, and that they cannot vanish and reappear under a new profile after behaving badly.

What to look for as a client

Do not treat the badge as a summary. Read what sits underneath it:

• How long the account has existed
• Completed orders, not just reviews
• Whether the reviews describe the work or just say great seller
• Response time and completion rate

A new account with a verified badge is still a new account.

What to do as a freelancer

Get verified early. It is a small amount of admin that measurably improves how many clients reply, and it is the cheapest credibility available to a new profile.

Verification does not prove someone is good. It proves they are accountable, which is the precondition for everything else.
